Harvestman, U.S. Christmas, Minsk | Hawkwind, Triad CD

Hawkwind has a strange legacy. This enigmatic British band seems to be simultaneously unheard by the majority of the world’s rock listeners while also standing as one of the most influential psychedelic bands of all time. Classic albums like Space Ritual, In Search of Space, Doremi Faso Latido, and Warrior on the Edge of Time have permanently hammered Hawkwind’s artistic stamp into underground music. Although there have been other tributes to these space warriors, Hawkwind Triad is unique because it feels like a real album. Each band has approached these iconic songs with respect, but each also recognized the need for these songs to be played in a new space and time. The result is a full-length psychedelic feast that not only captures the feel of Hawkwind’s individual songs, but also has the feel of their classic albums. Even the artwork by Boston artist Thommy Saraceno captures the trippy surreality of many albums from the 70s. Most of all, Triad was done out of pure veneration for a band than laid a solid foundation for every heavy, trippy, weirdo band that exists now – as well as for those who will freak out in the future. - Nate Hall

Following is each artist’s take on this project:

Steve Von Till - Harvestman
For many years Hawkwind has occupied a special place in my own strange version of spiritual music history. While growing up in the punk and metal scene in the bay area, I was always attracted to the psychedelic and stranger corners of heavy music, always seeking the holy grail of sound. It paralleled my spiritual interests in ancient Europe spirituality and an obsession with megaliths. Hawkwind was a natural focal point for my interests. Famous for participating in Britain’s free festival circuit and Stonehenge in particular, Hawkwind for this young American looking back over the ocean for inspiration embodied a direct connection between ancient Europe and psychedelic heavy music. Was this the modern music of the pagan Celts? It sounds insane, but it all makes sense to me.

The results of all three artists on this release are fantastic. Each of us with our own unique sounds and strengths honoring the same body of work creates something that weaves variations around a central wellspring of inspiration. It flows and I believe honors the original material and breathes life into the mythology of the Hawklords.

Tim Mead - Minsk
For us, Hawkwind truly embodies one of those crucial points of historical novelty, a band that took something so deep within the human experience and translated it into song in ways that opened doors to entire universes of creativity. It is certainly no secret that the three outfits sharing space on this recording have carved out places for themselves directly along the astral paths toward which Hawkwind began pointing the way. The paradoxes of heavy psychedelic music, the kind that Hawkwind created, make sense to us in deep ways. In one moment sheer sonic assault, and in the next waves of texture and understatement. At once sensical and yet other-worldly, simultaneously filled with visceral aggression and cerebral ponderance. Fundamentally tied to thoughtful normal consciousness, and yet constantly awash in thoughtless expanses of meditative trance and the transgression of that same normalcy.

Nate - USX
Sanford Parker first mentioned this Hawkwind project to me in the spring of 2007. I never thought of saying no. Sanford’s original idea was a two-way split, and Neurot was eager to release it for us. Steve Von Till’s involvement transformed the project into a true album. It is fitting that I don’t remember how we picked these songs, but they are all some of my favorite Hawkwind tunes. It was hard learning vocal melodies that I didn’t write, harder still for all of us to learn riffs that were recorded when everyone in Hawkwind was tripping out of their minds. But when we finally got it right it was all worth it. The idea of a Hawkwind cover album sounded cool back in 2007. It sounds even better nearly three years later when it is done and ready for release. It took a lot of work to record the songs, every band had to learn and execute these tracks that mean a lot to everyone who loves heavy, trippy, psychedelic music.

Slayer and Megadeth announce tour playing their 1990 albums front-to-back

Slayer and Megadeth have announced the American Carnage tour during which both bands will perform the albums they released in 1990 front-to-back. Slayer will perform Seasons In The Abyss and Megadeth will play Rust In Peace.

The bands last toured together 19 years ago and they'll be joined by Testament for the 25-date tour of North America. The tour was originally slated to begin early this year, but had to be pushed due to back surgery on Slayer vocalist/bassist Tom Araya. The frontman said, "Right after the surgery, I could tell that the issue was fixed. There's no more pain, it just feels really good. We cancelled two tours, and I don't feel great about that, but I couldn't deal with the pain anymore, and that's now completely gone." Tickets purchased for the originally announced tour will be honored at rescheduled dates.

The tour is divided into Canadian and U.S. legs--Canada's taking place in late July and America's beginning mid-August. Check out dates below.

So... I guess Trent Reznor has a new project with his old lady

The project is called How To Destroy Angels (wondering if the name is a nod to Coil??).

I haven't been real thrilled with anything he's done in a really long time, however the clip of the new material sounds pretty interesting, noisy rhythms, nasty synth lines, no poetry about souls and hearts - so far so good.

You can check it out here, and see what you think.

The Legendary Pink Dots - Cancelled

The Legendary Pink Dots have cancelled the remaining shows of the 30th anniversary tour due to the critical medical condition of the mother of singer Edward Ka-Spel. We wish Edward much strength in these difficult times. The Legendary Pink Dots (also known as LPD) are an Anglo-Dutch experimental rock band formed in London in August 1980. Although far outside the mainstream (in terms of their music and career path), LPD have released more than 40 albums and have a devoted worldwide following.

and now a message from crass

Penny Rimbaud is a poet, drummer, writer, former member of the performance art group EXIT and co-founder of the anarchist punk band Crass, with Steve Ignorant in 1977.

He also set up the anarchist/pacifist Dial House community in 1967 with Gee Vaucher and Phil Russell and helped to instigate the free festival movement.

An ardent, articu
late and still angry polemicist, his works include Reality Asylum, Rocky Eyed and Oh America. Says Rimbaud of his own legacy: “our response to things wasn’t a musician or a lyrical response, it was a political response.”

Louise Elliott is an Australian tenor saxophonist and has performed with a wealth of international musicians. Originally known for her appearances with cult rock outfits Laughing Clowns, The Saints, Ed Kuepper and Paul Kelly, Louise has a fiery commitment to inspiring and energetic live performance which has been referred to in the media as "her profoundly diverse smorgasbord of funk, blues and rock" and "an African inspired jazz explosion". She has played with Penny Rimbaud for 9 years.

Accompanied by Louise' haunting sax, Penny Rimbaud will read a selection of his work. Join us for an unforgettable evening with a truly righteous, independent spirit.

Coliseum - House With a Curse

Louisville's Coliseum have released  Their newest — self-produced, mixed by J. Robbins, named after a note written in the 1925 film version of Phantom Of The Opera — introduces different elements, paces, and textures into their breakneck compositional repertoire. It also features guest appearances from various folks associated in one way or another with Kentucky — Will Oldham, Jason Noble (Rodan, Shipping News, Rachels), Peter Searcy (Squirrel Bait), etc.

You can check out an interview and a sample of the album here.

There will also be some summer tour dates to support the new release.

Disintegration - The Cure Deluxe Edition

The Cure - Disintegration... THE PUFF...
Deluxe Edition - Polydor/Universal
Date : 24th May 2010

Three-Disc Deluxe Edition Produced & Compiled by Robert Smith, Including a Remastered Version of the Original Album, plus Unreleased Songs, Demos, Out-takes and Live Performances.

The Cure’s eighth studio album, released in 1989, is the dark tour de force Disintegration.

Following on from 1987's outstanding Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me release, and spurred by the hits “Lullaby”, “Fascination Street“, “Lovesong” and “Pictures Of You”, the album quickly became the group’s most successful yet, with sales topping more than 3 million, as the band sold out stadiums and arenas around the world.

Polydor/Universal reissues this landmark album, remastering the original, adding a disc of unreleased out-takes and demos, plus a third disc that contains a live performance of the entire album recorded in 1989 over 3 nights at Wembley Arena, London, the European climax of the The Cure's global ‘Prayer Tour‘. This Deluxe Edition comes with a 20 page booklet containing previously unseen pictures and art, as well as lyrics and an in depth overview of the period by the band's founder Robert Smith.

Robert Smith compiled, produced, and supervised the mastering of this three-disc collection, which covers the evolution of Disintegration, from demos and rehearsals to studio and stage. The first disc contains newly remastered versions of the album’s original 12 tracks.

Gathering 20 unreleased tracks, the second disc trawls through Smith’s home recordings to find early instrumental demos of fan favourites “Pictures Of You”, “Prayers For Rain” and “Fascination Street.” The Cure can be heard rehearsing and arranging various instrumental versions, including ”Homesick”, “Closedown” and “The Same Deep Water As You”, as well as playing studio out-takes of several other tracks, including “Plainsong”. The disc also contains four unreleased songs: “Noheart”, “Esten”, “Delirious Night” and a cover of Judy Collins’ “Pirate Ships”, the latter a solo performance by Smith that was recorded for, but ultimately not included on, Rubáiyát, a 1990 album celebrating Elektra Records’ 40th anniversary.

For the final disc, Smith remixes and expands Entreat, a live album recorded in 1989 at Wembley Arena. Entreat Plus combines the original’s eight tracks, remixed with the four 'missing' songs to create a complete contemporary live version of Disintegration.

Comments Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai: “Disintegration by The Cure is one of the greatest records of all time. It has the feel that only a tiny amount of albums have, that it exists completely in its own universe, immune to context or fashion. I literally cannot imagine the band members in a room playing these songs for the first time, its as if they've always been there. From stunning opener “Plainsong” through to “Untitled”, it is unrelentingly beautiful and achingly sad. Disintegration is a simply wonderful record.”
