Review: Mares Of Thrace - The Moulting

Mares of Thrace are a female duo from Canada that are bringing to the table a furious blend of sludge / doom metal with dashes of post hardcore and noise rock.

The pair have sort of been under the radar here in the states but they have been more than busy, sharing the stage with bands like Novembers Doom, Cynic, Destroyer 666, and most recently Ken Mode. Mares of Thrace have certainly paid dues and it shows on their new CD "The Moulting".

Don't let the idea of Mares of Thrace being a dual female unit fool you into thinking it's some sort of novelty, they come at you full force right from track one blending dirty noise loops and samples that cave in and give way to HUGE baritone gutar riffs and skull crushing percussion. The guitar tone on a lot of this is very heavy, very inspiring and the drums are driving  and not always in the pocket - perfect.

But it's not all easy stoner riffs either, while there is a fair share of head nodding to be had on some of the tracks that all gets pulled out from under you more often than not with well planned and perfectly executed syncopated parts.

If you like bands like Kylesa, Torche, Isis, Neurosis, Thumbnail, Jesus Lizard, These Arms Are Snakes, and the like you're going to eat this shit up and beg them for more.
I'm actually really shocked they haven't been picked up yet.
In short I just can't say enough good things about this band or this release and I demand that you all purchase this cd from them now.

And if you're still not convinced here's three videos of them playing live that will seal the deal.
