Danger Mouse / Sparklehorse / David Lynch Present - Dark Night Of The Soul

After a year of squabbling between EMI and Danger Mouse, this album will see the light of day on July 13th.

The album is a collaboration between Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, with several guest vocalists including
David Lynch, Frank Black, Scott Spillane, Iggy Pop, and more.
David Lynch also played a heavy hand in helping build the deluxe version of the release by creating photograph documents that are said to represent visually the dark themes of the record that presented themselves during production.

The deluxe edition of the release will feature a 48 page booklet of photography by David Lynch, poster, post card, two LPs, cd, and a bonus instrumental cd.

Luckily for you, NPR is providing a first listen of the record.

You can also buy your own Deluxe edition, or maybe just the standard edition of this release by visiting the Dark Night Of The Soul site here

REVIEW: Gene Priest And The Cardinal Sin - Living To Die

When I moved back to TN a year ago, one of my biggest motivators for that move was all of the excellent music that comes out of this region and how I wanted to make the next chapter of my life becoming part of the awesome scene here.

Today out of the clear blue sky (or facebook) I got hit in the earhole with total reinforcement of my ideals in the form of a band calld Gene Priest And The Cardinal Sin.

The band's debut release entitled "Living To Die" was mixed by the late Scott Minor of the band Sparklehorse, and offers up 4 very brutally honest yet somewhat soft spoken well  produced (and well mixed I might add) tracks.

On the surface, all these tracks present themselves as desolate and dreary, but just like a lot of the nautical themes that are brought up in the songs, just like the life in the sea itself, as you break the surface and examine more closely (especially lyrically) you find something else entirely.

Musically, the whole vibe of the record has blends and pieces of bands like Wooden Wand, Murder By Death, or maybe even times Angels of Light, in fact I could see this record easily fitting on the Young God Records roster of releases. All of that said, Gene Priest and company are not a photo copy of any of these acts by any means, you can feel every ounce of honesty and integrity belted out in every single note.

I'm really excited to see and hear more from this project.
Now, here's the final nail in the coffin, you can take your lazy ass on over to LapDance Academy and download the whole damn record for free, and I highly suggest you do.

But, if you need that final push here's a video for the title track "Living To Die"

*edited*

I made an error in my Sparklehorse research, Scott Minor is alive and it was his partner Mark Linkous who passed.
I apologize to Scott if he's reading.

Review: Vilipend - Plague Bearer

Vilipend are a four piece project from Toronto, Canada that have been busy since 2007 recording and sharing the stage with acts like Today Is The Day, Converge, High On Fire, and more.

On their newest 7" "Plague Bearer", Vilipend serve up three heavy cocktails of 90s style post hardcore / noise rock mixed with a little slow grinding metal for good measure, imagine The Jesus Lizard VS Botch in a three round fight to the death.

From the heavy ass detuned crushing steam roller riffs to out of control spastic breaks all held together with haunted distorted melodies, "Plague Bearer" is a non stop aural assault.

The 7" itself looks really nice, pressed on red vinyl,
and if you're too hip to listen to records you can also get an ipod compatible 1's and 0's version of the record. Go on over to the No List Records site now to pick up your copy.
Peep the end of the post to see a live video of Vilipend performing the title track "Plague Bearer"

Review: Mares Of Thrace - The Moulting

Mares of Thrace are a female duo from Canada that are bringing to the table a furious blend of sludge / doom metal with dashes of post hardcore and noise rock.

The pair have sort of been under the radar here in the states but they have been more than busy, sharing the stage with bands like Novembers Doom, Cynic, Destroyer 666, and most recently Ken Mode. Mares of Thrace have certainly paid dues and it shows on their new CD "The Moulting".

Don't let the idea of Mares of Thrace being a dual female unit fool you into thinking it's some sort of novelty, they come at you full force right from track one blending dirty noise loops and samples that cave in and give way to HUGE baritone gutar riffs and skull crushing percussion. The guitar tone on a lot of this is very heavy, very inspiring and the drums are driving  and not always in the pocket - perfect.

But it's not all easy stoner riffs either, while there is a fair share of head nodding to be had on some of the tracks that all gets pulled out from under you more often than not with well planned and perfectly executed syncopated parts.

If you like bands like Kylesa, Torche, Isis, Neurosis, Thumbnail, Jesus Lizard, These Arms Are Snakes, and the like you're going to eat this shit up and beg them for more.
I'm actually really shocked they haven't been picked up yet.
In short I just can't say enough good things about this band or this release and I demand that you all purchase this cd from them now.

And if you're still not convinced here's three videos of them playing live that will seal the deal.

Review: Clipd Beaks - A World Without End - C60

For those of you who haven't got turned on to this band yet, Clipd Beaks are a three piece unit from California who provide their own flavor of (for a lack of a better term) noise rock.

Their newest release "A World Without End" offers up 60 minutes of B sides, demos, and jam sessions from their previous CD / 2LP release "To Realize"

The cassette starts off with muffled loops and really up front and present vocals, this was not what I was expecting, my initial reaction was it was a poor dub or just poor overall production so I start turning the dial on the cassette deck, total fake out... track one starts to explode with martial drum patterns, drones, heavy bass, and the vocals start to fit into the mix perfectly and this sets the tone for the whole album.

A World Without End is a 60 minute non-stop assault on your ears and your brain, eerie drones and reverb drowned vocals pairing up with washes of scratchy noise washes all held together with pounding, constant, entrancing drums. The whole thing sounds very inspired by bands like Grotus or maybe even some Helios Creed so needless to say if you're a fan of those bands or you just like original, noisy, creep out sounds this is a tape you should pick up.

The cassette was limited to 100 copies - hand made - hand numbered - glow in the dark
What weirdo music / noise lover can pass that up??

They have 21 of these slabs of magnetic tape left, and you can pick your copy of it up here.

SWANS - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

The album is currently being mixed by Micheal Gira and Bryce Goggin at trout recordings and will be out this fall on Young God Records.

Grails - Black Tar Prophecies IV

Grails have a new vinyl only release out now on important records.
Here's what the label has to say about the release.

First 200 copies on "coke bottle"
Picture discs are limited to 500
    T shirts available
    here
With Black Tar Prophecies IV, Grails re-awaken the series that initially began the run of records that mapped their rise to the forefront of modern instrumental music. While recording their full-length records with an eye towards cohesion and epic production, the Black Tar series affords Grails a backdoor to a black lodge where they can explore total head music. With a more lawless atmosphere and an overtly dark aesthetic, Black Tar's relentless re-mixing and sonic juxtapositions return the listening experience to a more innocent position, where expectations can be exploded and insidious sentiments come dressed in gently poisonous forms. In this volume Grailscombine backmasked Satanic tape collage with old Emmanuelle soundtracks, pushing them further in the direction of a classical Italian melodrama soundtracked by Nurse with Wound.
The Black Tar material is conceived slowly, in between tours and full-length albums, giving Black Tar its own experimental space and keeping its final sum unknown even to its practitioners. As before, the series' format will consist of 2 vinyl EPs and an eventual CD version featuring both EPs and any extra tracks completed in the meantime.
Like the slab of black slate in the opening of Kubrick's 2001, Black Tar is an attempt to bring the ritual act of music back to it's original mysterious genesis, where the listener and artist both stare into a nebula's electric cloud before it takes it's inevitable shape as a planet.

You can pick up the standard LP or the even more limited picture disc version of this release by visiting important records here.

The Bride Screamed Murder or Hope I'm old before I start to suck?

Have you ever had a good time on bad drugs? It's like having a scab that's so painful when you pick it, you can't stop making yourself bleed because it feels too damn good. (the) Melvin’s have made the audio equivalent of bashing your toe with a ball peen hammer and loving every second of it. The last two Melvins records have seen cohesiveness in songwriting, not as apparent since Stoner Witch and Houdini. This, dare I say, near radio friendliness that has possessed (the) Melvins is due in no small part to Jared and Cody of Big Business, who joined the fold for 2006's (a) Senile Animal; arguably, one of the best Melvins records. (a) senile animal was home to A History of Badmen, an amazing magnum opus that found its way into a horrible Lindsay Lohan movie. (all Lindsay Lohan movies?) This record is not that record...at all. It's still got cohesiveness, but not the way Nude in Boots, and animal were. No, I would say this record is a total amalgamation of Big Buisness/Melvins aesthetic. It's raw, heavy and at times hard to listen to, but what the F$#@ did you buy a Melvins record for if not to blow out your speakers with heavy static and jazz interludes? The cover of My Generation, is almost mocking in it’s over expression "Hope I die before I get old." It seems that The Bride Screamed Murder is the melding point of new Melvins and old. It's more experimental than the last two records but, even in the dissonance the rhythms do enough to differentiate it from previous outings into noise. Speaking of rhythms, the wall of sound that is the Crover/Cody drum attack is so prevalent and awesome on this record, it starts out with a whole song written around the drum cadence. It's a mean record and stripped, but beefy at the same time. It's a big block engine purring with menace and screaming into the night with fury, insanity and a cock sure swagger that would scare the bejesus out of the average weekend warrior out for a drive. This is the new Melvins, staking their claim to a music scene that they very obviously helped to create. Much like the Who, the Melvins are legends in their own time, and thank god it took forever for them to get there. They didn't burn out, they didn't fade away, they just got stranger and better as they watched many of their contemporaries do the opposite.
